Dave Erfle – Gold Volatility, Miners Lag, and M&A This Week

Cory
April 22, 2025

We’re joined by Dave Erfle, Founder and Editor of Junior Miner Junky, to break down the latest surge and correction in the gold price, and how investors should be reading the signals from gold stocks.

Key topics covered:

  • Market-wide volatility and gold’s role as the only true safe haven

  • Why miners sold off even as gold peaked, and what that signals

  • Expectations for Q1 earnings: Will high margins attract new interest?

  • Why M&A activity is heating up but still largely driven by Asian firms

  • Context on the sector’s size: Market value has been growing fast

Dave also highlights recent takeovers like Lumina Gold and Triple Flag’s acquisition of Orogen, and explains why generalists may soon rotate into miners as broader markets stay unstable.

Gold and miners could give back lot of gains on paper and disappointing investors again if and I say if Trump gets tariffs deals with big countries like India, Japan, Europe and China starts to negotiate, also Cease-fire with Russia, Ukraine war, and probably Iran having to negotiate, all these will give stock market what it wants to make another run to new highs and people will sell all those gold stocks and the dumb money will be stuck again holding long term and not taking profits.

Yes Paul you are right. Anyone who holds commodity stocks long term isn’t being smart. Not too sure anyone here holds gold stocks long term. Some do hold physical and they’ve still done well. Most accumulate during bear times. Might not get out at tops but don’t hold tight through the next cycle. Sorry if you’ve been burned. Seems you comment a lot about suckers losing money on sell offs in gold stocks when bull runs have ended. You never seem to comment on the big gains made. As DT has pointed a few times you can’t fall in love with and hold your gold plays long term. Take profits and redeploy in sectors that are out of favour or sit on your profits til the next cycle hits.

Markets can be very cruel and fickle, but you forgot to mention the 900 lb. guerilla in the room and that is the debt. America is so broke, and the debt will be their undoing. The debt has to be paid by one side or the other, either the borrower or the lender. There will be a reckoning. America’s debt is fast approaching $37 trillion. If you stack $1000 bills of US denomination one on top of another it would take a pile 58 miles high to equal $1 trillion. Now if you have 37 trillion that same pile would be 2,146 miles high. DT LOL!

The Toronto Maple Laffs beat Ottawa last night 3-2, but their chances of winning The Stanley Cup are lousy because when it comes down to the crunch the laffs always fold under pressure. LOL! DT 🤣🤣🤣
